Adam Bronzeman-Pask Clinches Senior GB Medal

E-mail Print PDF

FISA Rowing World Cup Regatta 2009: ICBC’s Adam Freeman-Pask has won a bronze medal for lightweight single sculls at the Rowing World Cup in Banyoles, Spain. Freeman-Pask replaced Olympic gold medallist Zac Purchase (due to illness) as the GB representative in the men's lightweight single claiming his first international medal at senior level. Earlier this year he convincingly won the third phase of GB Rowing Winter Assessment Trials at Boston Lincolnshire and was subsequently placed in the top lightweight pair of the country. After an average performance from the Lwt 2- last month at GB Final Trials, Freeman-Pask moved back to the single scull for the first of three World Cup regattas. This is the first time a student from Imperial has won a sculling medal at a World Cup regatta. This latest achievement places Freeman-Pask in a very strong position for selection to the GB squad for the Olympics in 2012; especially as the only GB lightweight to medal at the regatta.

Lunt, Thompson & Davies win at Twickenham

Twickenham Regatta 2009: Heartthrob Matt Lunt took first place in the IM3 1x event after an inspirational win from Erica Thompson and Rachael Davies in the W IM1 2x event earlier in the day. Glorious sunshine glistened off the pewter tankards as the winners collected their well-deserved prizes. The 1,250 metre course lies on a stretch of the Thames between Eel Pie Island and Richmond Bridge and offered many of IC’s novices their first taste of small boat racing. Confident steering proved the catalyst for success with many crews falling victim to the course’s bending profile.

Essen International Regatta 2009: Gold for ICBC cox Henry Fieldman for the U23 GB 8+ eased the pain of IC’s Danny Bellion, Henry Goodier, Josh Yerrell and Leo Carrington, who were defeated last weekend at the elite Essen International Regatta in Germany. The four have become the pride of Trapmore’s heart and have been elevated into celebrity status around the club. The crew were not expected to medal at the regatta but were instead sent to gain experience against top senior crews. They faced elite national squads and raced well offering promising hopes for the future. Trapmore (with no son’s to his name) has in recent weeks spent hours tweaking the crew in private outings with a view to getting the four onto the U23 GB squad next year. This would be a great test of their character and speed as the current U23 GB 4- was competing in the same race. But Bellion became suddenly and dramatically ill on the flight meaning Trapmore had to substitute for the race.

Rowing at Imperial College 1942-1945

E-mail Print PDF
E.J. Cove studied Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College from 1942-1945 and was an active member of ICBC during this time. Cove recently contacted the club and shared a personal account of his memories, as well as a gallery of photographs. ICBC is continually improving historical records of the club since it's foundation in 1919 and greatly welcomes alumni to share their stories.

When I first entered IC in 1942 nobody knew how long the war would last. Neither America nor Japan was yet involved, and despite the fact that we were getting material aid from America Britain was standing alone against a powerful enemy. Although we never entertained the possibility of defeat, everybody expected the war to last for many years and our Government had to plan accordingly.

Food Aid Dispatched to Italy: ICBC Eat Entire Village

E-mail Print PDF

Training Camp Lovere 2009: Emergency food aid has been dispatched to the quaint town of Lovere in Northern Italy where locals are recovering from 10 days of severe strain on food stocks. Despite the three meals provided to ICBC by the town, local supermarkets were struggling to keep shelves filled. The limited shopping time available to the rowers between siesta and the 6 hours of water training did little to ease the demand. Athletes have submitted claims to local authorities of being pointed at and discussed: “That’s another one of those English rowers who eat everything. We’ve sold out of brioche..! This has never happened before. They just eat everything”. Rationing has now commenced at Lovere since the departure of 70 rowers and coaches and 35 boats from ICBC who were hosted by rowing club Canottieri Sebino on the banks of Lake Iseo near Milan. The training camp marks the end of the head race season and the beginning of the summer regattas.
